"True professionals throughout the day on and off stage. Your performance was beautiful!" - Learning & Inclusion Team

"You were an absolute pleasure! We were blown away by the standard of your performance and the children are a real credit to the school. Well done! We have just been singing your praises in the office this morning!" - Karen, Aldeburgh Music

At Hadleigh Community Primary School we want to make music an enjoyable learning experience where every child feels valued and eager to achieve their very best. We believe that music is powerful and enables both personal expression and emotional development. We want singing to be at the heart of our school, through which children will learn about the structure and organisation of music, while gaining confidence in performance and promoting well-being. We currently have a silver singing award endorsed by ‘Sing Up’. We want music to play a vital role in each child’s development providing all the knowledge required to experience and enjoy being a musician.

We have chosen to teach music as a specialist subject with appropriate sequencing and progression to secure long term memory in musical knowledge. All children from Reception to Year 6 have a weekly class music lesson. Every child learns at least one instrument including the ukulele throughout Key Stage 2. Children have the opportunity to learn recorder starting with a club after school for Year 3 children and the possibility to join an intermediate or advanced group during years 4 to 6. Year 4 children have ‘taster’ violin sessions with our visiting string specialist and may continue with group lessons if desired. A small number of pupils participate in flute, clarinet and guitar tuition. We have a very large non-selective and popular choir with children from years 4 to 6. During the year the choir takes part in several performances including Christmas presentations and the summer concert.

Children are encouraged to join in musical activities out of school with a celebration of their achievements in assemblies and class lessons. Two singers of the week are chosen, one from each of the two key stages with a presentation of certificates during ‘Weekly Wonders’ assembly. All children have opportunities for performance of musical talent in lessons, year group sessions, talent shows, break time recitals, plays and concerts.

The scheme of learning follows the National Curriculum objectives with the use of ‘Charanga’ to use a spiral method of learning and focus on the interrelated dimensions of music. The children are regularly given the opportunity to express their ideas/opinions during their Hadleigh Community Primary School musical journey.

Hadleigh's Year of the Sheep

In October 2015, we performed at a local church for Hadleigh's Year of the Sheep Grande Finale. You can listen to it here:
